Claire Barkhuizen

psychologist

Claire Barkhuizen is a Registered Psychologist currently completing her Master of Clinical Psychology training. She has a strong background in working with children and families, including experience in neurodevelopmental settings where she primarily conducted ADHD and learning assessments in a multidisciplinary setting.

Claire has extensive experience providing assessment and intervention in mental health settings, including working with young people with complex presentations. Her long-standing interest in child development and family systems led her to pursue further training in perinatal mental health, and she has substantial private practice experience supporting perinatal families.

Claire takes a holistic, strengths-based approach to her clinical work, aiming to deliver assessments that are meaningful, practical, and genuinely helpful for children and their families. She brings an empathetic, strengths-based and curious stance to her practice, seeking to understand the underlying drivers of behaviour, reducing suffering and nurturing strong foundations for wellbeing and avoiding pathologising the human experience.

Claire is deeply inspired by neurodiversity-affirming practice and is excited to work within a multidisciplinary team whose approach to Autism assessment in school-aged children is trauma-informed, culturally safe, and respectful of individual differences. She is particularly enthusiastic about utilising the most current, neuroaffirming assessment and psychometric tools available.

Outside of her clinical work, Claire is a mother of three, and brings her lived experience of parenting into her understanding of families. She has a deep love of the outdoors and travel, and enjoys exploring and experiencing the world around her. When not in the clinic, Claire can often be found in or on the water, climbing, or hiking—both locally and overseas.
